Rules of Writing…

I recently read a blog entry on one of my writing sites about the overuse of the word AS…

Similar comments about over use of adverbs, fragment sentences, and comma splices have all been out there over time.  Many of them have the caveat of moderation, but so many people have critiqued my work with the NO ADVERBS, NO FRAGMENTS, NO CLICHES etc…mentality.  No doubt next month I will get NO AS…

People read things like this and then decide that all examples of this are BAD and should be ruled out.  That is not the point of such a commentary!

Instead they are trying to prevent the common new writer’s failing of over using these common parts of speech…

All of them are important and valid writing tools.  Just keep in mind that they all should blend into your work and not be a constant factor…

Good rule of thumb, don’t use any of these things more than once in a paragraph, aim for one or two per chapter at most.

Look at where you have used these things and consider where they add VALUE to your book, or story.  If they don’t just take them out because they all can bog down the flow when used unnecessarily!  =P

THAT is what you should take from these types of comments…not that you should edit your story to death!

KEEP WRITING!!!

  1. This is really good to remember! Rules are great guidelines, but don’t necessarily need to be taken to extremes!
