Time & Relativity…

Over the last few days I have been having a discussion with a Physics Professor at EWU about the nature and effect of black holes…for my new Novella Dark Silver.  It is a pre/sequel of Silver Strife, where a group of humans is trapped on a space ship near a black hole.

We have gone into great detail about the Theory of Relativity which was devised by Albert Einstein and states that time varies with speed.  Also that time is warped by gravity.  So at the event horizon of a black hole, time would slow…

The question of course being how much people in that slowed timeline would be aware of it, and finally what would be the perception and reality of such a place.

At the end of the day I have to wonder HOW close to modern science must sci-fi be?  I don’t want to be outside of reality, and yet Star Trek and Star Wars each have faster than light drive.  Isn’t that beyond physics as currently stated?

How much can be twisted for plot purposes when dealing with something few people understand?

I consider myself a very science driven writer, but I like sci-fi even if it is off the deep end as to realism…

Ahhh the questions of fictional reality they irk us…

Keep Writing!
