Grace Burrowes’ Will’s True Wish

Review: 4.0 Stars

Will’s True Wish by Grace Burrowes!

It’s  a dog’s life…

Will Dorning, as an earl’s spare, has accepted the thankless duty of managing his rambunctious younger siblings, though Will’s only true companions are the dogs he’s treasured since boyhood. When aristocratic London is plagued with a series of dognappings, Will’s brothers are convinced that he’s the only person who can save the stolen canines from an awful fate.

But the lady’s choice…
Shy, bookish Lady Susannah Haddonfield has no patience with loud, smelly beasts of any species, but must appear to like dogs so as not to offend her sister’s only marital prospect. Susannah turns to Will, an acquaintance from her most awkward adolescent years, to teach her how to impersonate a dog fancier. Will has long admired Susannah, though he lacks the means to offer for her, and yet as they work together to rescue the purloined pets, it’s loyal, dashing Will who steals Susannah’s heart.

Positives:

This is another great offering from Grace Burrowes!

A beautiful story about a love that survived childhood pain.

Will Dorning is the second son, he has taken over the business, and management of his younger brothers and his older brother’s Earldom.

He seeks to marry them all off to worthy ladies while he becomes his brother’s unpaid but content servant. His true love has always been his dogs, their training and breeding. Providing working dogs for shepherds and family pets for nobles and tradesmen alike.

Susannah Haddonfield has no time for beasts. Her only goal is to marry her younger sister well, and then retire to her life as a respectable maiden aunt. The written word is her only true passion.

But when they come together to plot their younger sibling’s lives they reignite the love they both left behind.

This is a touching love story about two people who have devoted their lives to helping their families, while ignoring their own needs and desires.

Negatives:

For the first time in perhaps forever, I have a pet peeve (pun intended) with this novel by Ms. Burrowes. I get that Will is a dog trainer and it makes sense that in his thoughts and words many references would be made to dogs and dog training.

However, it is not limited to Will and begins to take away from the book a bit.

A few less references to dogs and this one might have been 5 stars.

Overall:

Will’s True Wish is another great book from Grace Burrowes well worth reading again!

Tremaine’s True Love is Another instant Classic!

Review: 4.0 Stars

Tremaine’s True Love by Grace Burrowes!

He’s had everything he could ever want…until now
Wealthy wool magnate Tremaine St. Michael is half French, half Scottish, and all business. He prowls the world in search of more profits, rarely settling in one place for long. When he meets practical, reserved Lady Nita Haddonfield, he sees an opportunity to mix business with pleasure by making the lady his own.

Nita Haddonfield has a meaningful life tending to others, though nobody is dedicated to caring for Nita. She insists the limitations of marriage aren’t for her, then Tremaine St. Michael arrives-protective, passionate, and very, very determined to win Nita’s heart.

Positives:

This is another great offering from Grace Burrowes!

Tremaine is a business man by nature, and a French Comte by birth. Raised by his Scottish grandfather after the revolution claimed his parents lives, he has spent his life in trade.

Nita might be an earl’s daughter, but she left dreams of family and children behind her. Unconcerned about appearances or social niceties, she has focused her efforts on health and well being of the local people.

Each has an unconventional passion, and no expectation of marriage.

Together they discover true love can be a true partnership.

Negatives:

As always I struggle to complain about anything in Ms. Burrowes books.  This new series seems to embrace difference histories and struggles more than her previous books did.

SO perhaps the only complaint I can make is that it is not truly unique, but very few historical romances are.

Overall:

Tremaine’s True Love is a pleasant and enduring historical romance that will just leave you wanting more of the same!

The Tide of War dragged me in!

Review: 4.00 Stars

Summary:

The Tide of War by Lori A. Witt is book 1 in the Defending Epsilon Series.

Lieutenant Commander Kyle West is one of Earth Fleet’s greatest fighter pilots. Each day he leads his squadron into battle over Earth’s cities in a seemingly endless war against a vicious alien race, defending his home and his loved ones.

Millions of miles away, the Fleet’s Elite Squadron attacks from another angle, engaging the enemy on its home turf. Casualties are high, and the Squadron needs more of the Fleet’s very best. But joining the Elite is a death sentence—a surety Kyle isn’t willing to face. Until a devastating attack wipes out the family he refused to leave.

Commander Andrei Dezhnyov, an Elite Squadron gunner, isn’t sure what to make of the cocky new American pilot. Kyle is equally uncertain about the snarly Russian, but as they warm up to each other, their tentative alliance becomes a deep bond—one that endangers them both when a daring and disobedient rescue reveals secrets that call into question everything they’ve ever believed about their enemy. Secrets that their superiors would kill to protect.

Positives:

The Tide of War was a bit of surprise for me. I’m not sure exactly what I expected, maybe a standard gay soldier story that was based in the future, or a starship troopers’ style sci-fi war story, it was both and yet neither.

There are four separate relationships in the story, two M/M, one M/F, and one platonic partnership/friendship. So, instead of being a single love story it weaves in and out of these different relationships.

The plot is very interesting. An interstellar war has been raging across the Earth for decades, killing tens of thousands a year. The aliens raid random cities, blowing up civilians, structures, and whole cities. The United Earth military fights back both on Earth, and on a distant base around the alien’s home planet. But nothing is like it seems.

Negatives:

There is romance in the book, and it does greatly influence the plot, but this is not a romance in the traditional sense. Nor is it in any way erotic.

It is Science Fiction pure and simple, which may take some readers by surprise. Particularly readers of Lori’s other three personalities L.A. Witt, Lauren Gallagher, and Ann Gallagher.

Even though I was not sure what I was getting into I still enjoyed it a great deal. BUT if you need those things to enjoy a book, this might not be for you.

My only TRUE regret was that the major plot twist was obvious to me far too early in the book. I would have liked to maintain the illusion much longer, and have the reveal be more of a shock.

Overall:

The Tide of War by Lori A. Witt is a unique science fiction drama driven by romance!

50 Ways to Ruin a Rake…FUN and SMART Historical!

Review: 4.00 Stars

In 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake by Jade Lee

Mellie has a plan…

Mellie Smithson is trapped in the country with no suitors and no prospects on the horizon except, perhaps, the exasperating—although admittedly handsome—guest of her father. She’s looking for any excuse to go to London to meet more eligible men.

Trevor has a problem…

Trevor Anaedsley’s grandfather has cut off his funds until such time as he gets engaged. Trevor escapes to the country—ostensibly to visit his old tutor, Mr. Smithson, but actually to duck his creditors—where he meets Smithson’s lovely daughter, Mellie. The obvious solution is suddenly before him—but the lady has ideas of her own, and Trevor’s going to have to measure up…But trying to keep things impersonal, and unemotional does not work so well!

Positives:

This is a great historical romance. An emotional story about life, love, and the difficulty of class, and family expectations.

This is a story about the changing state of noble stature to merchant success that embraces both.

A smart blue stocking, and a duke’s heir fake an engagement to get her out of an unwanted courtship, and him out of the threat of financial ruin.

They find that they cannot live apart, love conquers all!

Negatives:

I admit the whole…I am going to catch a man concept bothers me. However, I understand the reality of this era and so I accept this motivation!

The money goal is perhaps even worse but more usual. If you read a lot of historical romances this will all be par for the course.

Both of these are fairly standard in the genre.

That is at its base my only true complaint…the story line is a bit too standard.

Overall:

I loved the forbidden love and class shattering aspects of this story!

It is a very good historical romance novel!

Silver Strife! #SnippetSunday

Silver Strife e-book
Enjoy this short snippet from Silver Strife!

Quicksilver has just been rescued from the Union’s Elite University by a squadron of Resistance soldiers lead by Captain Mitchell. This scene occurs in the crowded transport van on the way back to the rebels’ base.

“Over the next few hours, I kept my eyes lowered and my hands clasped in an attempt to appear wholly non-threatening, but I could not help but come to the uncomfortable realization that Mitchell was watching me. His attentive gaze lingered right at the corner of my vision. I tried to ignore him, but his eyes were like a brand, creeping under my skin until the itch became unbearable. Reluctantly, I turned to look at him. Our eyes met, and we sat staring at each other across those few inches for a very long time.

I just could not bring myself to look away, and the longer we stared at each other the quieter the van became. Conversations slowed down and ground to a halt. You could have heard a grenade pin drop. Maybe that would have broken the tension. As it was, I barely managed to tear my eyes away, look down at my hands folded in my lap, and take a deep breath. I thought that would be the end of it, but then a large callused hand grabbed hold of my chin, forcing me to look up and meet his eyes again. In the near silence, I heard several in drawn breaths. One of them was definitely mine.”

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

R E B I R T H

I was alive, in a new mortal shell, a different place, and time. If I had believed in some benevolent supernatural creature that controlled every aspect of reality, I would have thanked it. Instead, I just felt a sort of ambivalent relief.

Time was a true fourth dimension. Ages and epochs made long sweeping circles across the void, and immortals traveled between those rings like icebreakers smashing through a frozen sea. So we died just like everyone else, a truth that I thought a glaring irony. However, we came back, born again into new flesh, and in this new vessel, I could forge ahead in the eons long war against the Purists—a war that raged across the whole of space and time.

For years, I caught only brief glimpses of this life: a stern woman’s face looking down at me as I lay in a clear plastic bassinet, the pain of a broken wrist, and the unpleasant jab of tanbark against my spine. Born into this body, my spirit slept in a small corner of its mind. United and yet separate until the physical form was ready, for a child’s mind simply could not process eternity.

My thoughts snapped into place, and I inherited, in excruciating detail, the memories of a lifetime lived. No immortal knew what happened when our minds achieved synergy, but it felt like my soul suddenly clicked into alignment with this body’s neurons. The process was abrupt and shocking even after untold permutations, like a memory dump from a massive supercomputer. Twenty years of daily events, knowledge, and struggles were mine in a split second. I knew who I was, where I was, and what I was. A place, time, and identity that could not have been less to my liking.

My vision cleared. I stood in a well-lit hall lined with thick metal plates and reinforced doors. A calm yet commanding voice played in the background—a subtle reminder to cultivate unity and serve the greater purpose. “Preserve strength. Embody perfection. Maintain obedience.”

My eyes discreetly explored the lines and curves of my body. It was petite and feminine, with sufficient curves to avoid being boyish but a distinct lack of height. The skin on my delicate long-fingered hands was a dark caramel, the nails neatly manicured, and I ran one of them through straight waist-length black hair to feel its smooth silky thickness.

Surrounding me were a plethora of other young people, all of them disturbingly alike. They all had dark hair, dark eyes, and honey-toned skin, complemented by bodies that were young, attractive, and fit. These were the Union Elite. All dressed in uniforms of white button-down shirts, black slacks or skirts, and shiny polished black shoes. They looked like bronzes cast from the same mold, and the effect was eerie, like being surrounded by dozens of identical twins all filing in an unnatural orderly fashion to their next classes. This compound was built to house and educate society’s so-called best and brightest, but the hall and building surrounding it were armored for a reason.

I knew, from this and previous lives, that there was danger here, and not just to the students’ minds from blatant indoctrination. Their Civil War was a constant threat, often bleeding over into these remaining pockets of civilization. The year was three hundred and fifty-six in the Plebeian calendar, and this was the planet Earth.

The Elites’ university was situated on the semi-arid high plains that I remembered as the United States of America. Now this area of windblown and sun-scorched earth was called the North Western Sector. When the new era was founded centuries ago, the people of the world had experienced a brief period of renewed hope. The world had been united, all people were equal, and they would work together to build a better future for humankind. The newly christened Elites would be benevolent and altruistic leaders.

The naïveté of those people and their dream of endless peace had not lasted a decade. Instead, the world had been plunged into a centuries-long Civil War, and was ruled over by a cruel and selfish caste of super humans who viewed the rest of humanity as base, dangerous, animals. All at the whim and design of a single Purist, another immortal, who had twisted those noble dreams to his purpose. Yet, those events were now distant history, and I had to live in the here and now.

A bell chimed, and the students disappeared into their bunker-like classrooms. I stood frozen in place as they passed me by, still caught in the shock of a new and different existence. A number of confused glances were thrown my way.

“Lini. Is something wrong?” A soft touch to my arm preceded the serious expression that drifted into view. The voice and face were familiar. One of the many Elites who was genetically this body’s first cousin. She motioned me toward one of the open doors.

“No, nothing is wrong, Saran. I apologize for my inattention.” I forced myself into motion and trailed after the line of students filing into their next lecture.

The room was stark, white cinderblock walls with a half-dozen small wooden desks facing a larger desk and chalkboard. The lack of windows managed to give it an even more depressing penal feel. I plopped into an open seat, dropped my light backpack on the floor, and turned to face the instructor.

“Today, we will be discussing the foundation of the Union,” said Charles, the history professor. He leaned against his large wooden desk in a casual pose that portrayed both confidence and arrogance in spades. Dark hair and eyes, sharp cheekbones, and a toned body, a model specimen of the Union’s breeding program. In a vain attempt to delay a long afternoon of monotony and conveniently edited events, I sighed, and put my hand up.

Charles ignored me.

“Before the founding of the Union, the world was littered with separate countries. These small powers drove a nearly constant state of warfare, resulting in widespread poverty, and humanitarian abuses. Today, I want us to discuss how these governmental, cultural, social, and economic entities were motivated by greed, racism, and false prophets to enforce their individual wills on all peoples. Saran, if you could read the excerpt on page 325, the third paragraph concerning Manifest Destiny.”

History, or the self-serving fiction of a victorious reactionary authoritarian regime.

The Union had started out as a tempting illusion dangled before the people of Earth by a Purist, but it quickly turned into the malignant nightmare he intended. Millions died in the ethnic cleansing Petrov instituted, and even more in the unsuccessful wars to overthrow him. Hundreds of years later, a small group ruled from on high by virtue of the “superiority” of their birth and technological advancement had ground to a screeching halt. Meanwhile, the rest of humanity was withering under the weight of its own impotence.

The distinct crack of submachine gun fire yanked me back into the present. My senses instantly alert to the slightest movement. Another shot rang out, and men’s shouts laced with pain came from the direction of the building’s entrance. The unexpected sounds faded into a misleading tranquility.

“Raid,” I whispered to shatter the pregnant silence.
